Effects of offshore wind farms on the bat migration over the sea (BATMOVE)

The project aims to improve knowledge about the spatial and temporal distribution of migratory bats across the North and Baltic Seas and their connectivity. These should provide a first basis for the development of measures to prevent collisions of migratory bats with offshore wind farms across the seas.

So far, there is a lack of the necessary knowledge for the batwing over the sea in order to reliably estimate the possible effects of offshore wind turbines. The project will provide the basis for the development of appropriate measures to mitigate and avoid collisions of offshore bats with offshore wind turbines. This includes, in particular, improving knowledge of the spatial and temporal distribution and migratory routes of migrating bats over the North and Baltic Seas, as well as the evaluation of detection methods and the development of an assessment methodology.

The Federal Agency for Nature Conservation supports FKZ 3515821900 from June 2016 to January 2019 with funds from the federal budget.

Die Auswertung vorhandener Daten zur Fledermauswanderung im Bereich der Nord- und Ostsee soll eine erste Übersicht hinsichtlich Phänologie, räumlicher Verteilung, Wetterabhängigkeit, Vorhersagemöglichkeiten, Verhalten an anthropogenen Strukturen und Auftreten von Kollisionen erbringen. Da bislang nur wenige Erfahrungen mit geeigneten Methoden zur Offshore-Erfassung von Fledermäusen vorliegen, sollen mögliche Methoden erprobt und evaluiert werden.

Auf diesen Ergebnissen aufbauend wird ein auf die Situation der deutschen Nord- bzw. Ostsee angepasstes Untersuchungskonzept erarbeitet und eine Studie zur Fledermauswanderung in ausgewählten Räumen in Nord- und Ostsee durchgeführt. Hierzu zählen auch Untersuchungen zur Herkunft und zu den Routen der wandernden Fledermäuse.

Die erlangten Kenntnisse dienen als erste Grundlage für die Entwicklung einer Bewertungsmethodik für den Fledermauszug.
