FINO1 Research Platform
In future, wind turbine installations will, to an increasing extent, be constructed not only onshore but also on the open sea, in order to exploit the favourable wind conditions which prevail there. A prerequisite for offshore wind farms of this type is a comprehensive knowledge of the on-site conditions to be found at sea, together with numerous technological and ecological factors. Wind turbines will require further development for use in offshore locations, or may need to be completely redesigned. Operating concepts will need to be defined and funding models established. As a basis for these operations, the research and commercial sectors will require data which are not yet available, or only available in insufficient quantity and quality.
For these reasons, the FINO1 research platform, located in the North Sea to the north of Borkum, was brought into service in 2003. On this site, comprehensive measurements and analyses are undertaken for the determination of ambient conditions (meteorology, hydrology, etc.) and the impact of offshore wind turbines upon the environment.
